Every business, whatever the size, will need storage of some sort at some stage or other. At the beginning that storage could be Mum’s spare bedroom, or even half the wardrobe in said bedroom. However, once a production line starts properly, then there could well be goods coming in, ingredients or chemicals for mixing, or perhaps food based, or pharmaceutical in nature. This is when temperature controlled warehousing coud be most effective. There are specifically designs with precise temperature and humidity controls to preserve sensitive items. Of course, it might be that the business now deals with hazardous materials, perhaps chemical cleaning or batteries are involved. In these situations, Hazmat warehousing is very likely to be needed. They are equipped with the most stringent and up to date safety measures to comply with the strictest regulations for the storage of dangerous products and materials.
Farmers and the food industry in general have used bulk containers for many years and the new storage facilities are equipped with bigger and more computer controlled spaces for raw materials, with excellent vehicular access for loading and unloading such bulk.
Distribution centres are focused on efficiently receiving, sorting and shipping goods to the end customer and do not generally handle long term storage of goods. Fulfillment centres are mostly associated with the e-commerce side of life. They wil receive in the goods for storage with the operation concentrating on picking, packing and dispatching to make it end to end complete package.
There are other types of handling and minimal storage too, by way of cross-decking facilities which involve incoming goods being moved directly to outbound vehicles to concentrate on speed and high-volume activity.
