There’s a great deal more to running a business than most folk think. It’s very easy to imagine orders flooding in through the front door and the bank account rolling in cash. But to get from the one to the other in a linear manner is not always as easy and straightforward as that. Much planning and organisation has to be put in place before beginning.
Firstly there needs to be some sort of business plan. What is the main product or service we have to offer; how much are we able to produce ourselves without having to buy in third party elements; do w hae enough knowledge of supplying products in bulk. Selling to the public is a whole new ball game if regular orders are going to be fulfilled. A great deal more than just selling the odd thing online through any of the commecial marketing sites. What may have begun as a means of disposing of many home made items to bring in a little profit, but to start a lifelong business to bring in income needs much more sccope. Making that business plan is essential. if funding or other finance is needed beyond what is available at home, then a clear plan is needed. It has to show what the article or service will be; how you plan to fun the manufacture and whether you will be applying for finance and how. Showing you have a grasp of costings up front is essential. No wooly half baked ideas will suffice. A funding supplier needs to know his investment in your business will have chance of paying him for his trouble. A clear table of cost to bring in parts or materials to make the sales item; costing the labour to produce the goods; will help be needed externally is also to be considered. Will there be rental of prremises to expan the operation when necessary. Deciding where the comapany wants to be in five ten and fifteen years is a good plan. It helps develop the serious mindset of looking ahead and planning for success and what is needed by way of contingencies to achieve the planned outcome. The plan should include opportunities to network with other suppliers and small business folk. Getting to know business advisers is always an excellent plan.
